Description
IGI 2: Covert Strike was released on February 21, 2003, by Codemasters. It gained popularity for its realistic graphics and immersive soundtracks. The game offered better FPS (frames per second) performance compared to IGI 1. As of 2025, over 100,000 copies have been sold in the UK. If you’re looking for more challenging and engaging missions, download IGI 2 for PC and enjoy the action.
Why is IGI 2 better than IGI 1?
Developers received negative feedback from many users after IGI 1. Players said the soundtrack felt unrealistic, and the graphics felt outdated or broken. This pushed the developers to release a new version with HD graphics and more natural, realistic soundtracks for a smoother gaming experience. That’s why the background sounds changed on each level. For example, when entering missions set in Arabic desert areas, the background audio included Quran recitations to represent the cultural setting, since most Arabs are Muslims.
In addition, players could now enjoy Multiplayer mode with friends and the online community by connecting to the server. This was a major achievement in 2003, at a time when technology was not very advanced and modern game engines had not yet been developed. These unique features make the game more popular among players, which is why it remains a popular choice today.
I.G.I 2: Covert Strike | Mission-by-Mission Storyline
Mission 1: Infiltration
Setting: Carpathian Mountains, Russia
Plot: David Jones, a former SAS operative, is deployed by parachute into a snowy Russian compound operated by the Russian mafia, who stole advanced EMP technology from a U.S. facility. His mission director, Phillip White, briefs him on infiltrating a heavily guarded weather station masking an underground lab. Jones must sneak past patrols, disable security cameras, and cross a river to access a mineshaft lift.
Key Objectives: Infiltrate the main compound, cross the river, and activate the mineshaft lift.
Narrative: Under the cover of night, Jones navigates the icy terrain, using stealth to avoid triggering alarms. The mission sets the tone for his covert operations, emphasizing precision and silence as he uncovers the mafia’s involvement in the EMP theft.
Mission 2: Deep in the Mines
Setting: Underground Mines, Russia
Plot: Jones descends into the mineshaft, discovering a network of tunnels leading to the weather station’s secret lab. The mafia’s operations are more extensive than anticipated, with armed guards and surveillance systems protecting their research.
Key Objectives: Navigate the mines, avoid detection, and reach the lab entrance.
Narrative: In the claustrophobic tunnels, Jones uses his knife and silenced weapons to eliminate threats quietly. A critical moment involves exploiting a train movement glitch to bypass a heavily guarded section, showcasing his resourcefulness in high-risk environments.
Mission 3: The Weather Station
Setting: Weather Station, Carpathian Mountains, Russia
Plot: Inside the weather station, Jones uncovers the first EMP chip, a critical component of the stolen technology. The station is crawling with enemies, and an alarm could summon reinforcements. White informs him that the chip’s data is vital for IGI’s research.
Key Objectives: Retrieve the EMP chip, eliminate key guards, and escape.
Narrative: Amid a snowstorm, Jones employs thermal goggles to track enemies through the blizzard. He neutralizes guards with precision headshots, securing the chip and setting the stage for a broader mission to recover the remaining technology.
Mission 4: Bridge Across the Dnestr
Setting: Dnestr River, Russia
Plot: To pursue the mafia’s supply chain, Jones must cross a heavily guarded bridge over the Dnestr River. Snipers and patrols make a direct assault impossible, forcing him to rely on stealth and environmental cover.
Key Objectives: Cross the bridge, disable snipers, and reach the extraction point.
Narrative: Jones discards his primary weapon to increase speed, using the riverbank’s bushes to avoid detection. His daring crossing under sniper fire highlights his ability to adapt to overwhelming odds, advancing the hunt for the EMP tech.
Mission 5: Ambush
Setting: Russian Countryside
Plot: Jones intercepts a mafia convoy transporting another EMP chip. He must destroy an armored vehicle and secure the chip before the convoy reaches its destination. Time is critical, as a helicopter extraction is imminent.
Key Objectives: Destroy the armored vehicle, steal the chip, and reach the extraction point.
Narrative: In a high-stakes ambush, Jones plants explosives and uses the chaos to grab the chip. The mission underscores the escalating urgency of his mission as the mafia tightens security around their assets.
Mission 6: Production Facility
Setting: Industrial Complex, Russia
Plot: The trail leads to a mafia-run production facility manufacturing EMP components. Jones must infiltrate the heavily fortified complex, gather intelligence, and sabotage the operation.
Key Objectives: Collect intelligence, destroy key equipment, and escape.
Narrative: Scaling rooftops to avoid ground patrols, Jones uses a risky jump over the central gate to access the facility. His sabotage cripples the mafia’s production, but the mission’s intensity reveals the growing scale of the EMP threat.
Mission 7: Border Crossing
Setting: Libyan Border
Plot: Jones tracks the EMP chips to Libya, where the mafia is collaborating with local forces. He must cross a heavily patrolled border without raising alarms, avoiding a deadly helicopter equipped with a .50-caliber machine gun.
Key Objectives: Cross the border undetected and reach the rendezvous point.
Narrative: Moving through dense bushes, Jones relies on timing to evade the chopper’s sweeps. His silent takedown of a sniper with a knife marks a pivotal moment, showcasing his stealth mastery in a hostile desert environment.
Mission 8: Libyan Rendezvous
Setting: Libyan City Outskirts
Plot: Jones meets a local contact to acquire a bomb needed for a diversion. The mission requires navigating a bustling urban area filled with mafia operatives and local mercenaries.
Key Objectives: Meet the contact, secure the bomb, and create a diversion.
Narrative: Blending into the shadows of the city, Jones uses a Desert Eagle to create controlled chaos, opening a critical gate. The mission’s simplicity belies the tension of operating in a crowded, unpredictable setting.
Mission 9: Prison Escape
Setting: Libyan Prison
Plot: A key ally is captured by the mafia’s Libyan partners. Jones must infiltrate a high-security prison, eliminate snipers, and free the prisoner before reinforcements arrive.
Key Objectives: Rescue the prisoner, neutralize threats, and escape.
Narrative: Triggering an alarm intentionally to lure guards, Jones uses a grenade to clear a path, saving time but risking exposure. The daring rescue amplifies the stakes, as the ally provides crucial intel on the EMP chips’ location.
Mission 10: Priboi’s Villa
Setting: Jach Priboi’s Villa, Libya
Plot: Jones targets Jach Priboi, a key mafia figure, at his fortified villa. Heavy weaponry, including RPGs, complicates the infiltration, but survival is paramount.
Key Objectives: Infiltrate the villa, gather evidence, and survive.
Narrative: Using windows for rapid entry, Jones navigates the opulent yet deadly villa. The mission’s brevity is offset by its intensity, as Priboi’s capture brings Jones closer to the EMP mastermind.
Mission 11: The Airfield
Setting: Libyan Airfield
Plot: Priboi’s intel points to an airfield where EMP components are being shipped. Jones must sabotage the fuel station to disrupt operations and buy time for IGI’s counterstrike.
Key Objectives: Activate the fuel station sabotage and hold the position.
Narrative: Racing against a three-minute timer, Jones distracts enemies with loud shots while securing the sabotage. His graffiti tag on a wall (a nod to speedrunner creativity) adds a personal flourish to the mission.
Mission 12: Zaleb’s Stronghold
Setting: Zaleb’s Stronghold, Libya
Plot: Jones assaults the stronghold of Zaleb, a mafia leader, using a helicopter for support. The mission is a rare opportunity to leverage heavy firepower, but time is not on his side.

Fix Broken Graphics in IGI 2
When you try to run this game on Windows 10 or 11, you may see broken graphics with oversized fonts on the display. This happens because the game was originally designed for older systems. To fix this, right-click on the IGI2.exe (game launcher), select “Properties,” and then open the “Compatibility” tab. Check the box that says “Run this program in compatibility mode for,” and choose Windows 8 from the dropdown list. Click Apply and then OK. Your game should now run properly. This method works for me, but if you still face the same issue, try updating your graphics driver or contact me for free support.
