Background
The story is set in the late 1990s, during a period of post-Cold War tension. A U.S. W-88 nuclear warhead, one of the most advanced and compact nuclear weapons, has been stolen from a military facility. The warhead’s small size makes it ideal for a suitcase nuke, posing a catastrophic threat. The IGI, a covert intelligence agency, recruits Agent Jones to track down the warhead and prevent its misuse. He is guided by Rebecca Anya, his mission handler, who provides intelligence via satellite comms and a PDA. The narrative unfolds through in-engine cutscenes, briefings, and mission objectives, with Agent Jones navigating hostile military bases across Estonia, Russia, and other locations.
Mission-by-Mission Storyline
Mission 1: Trainyard
Jones is deployed to an Estonian military trainyard to locate Josef Priboi, an Estonian arms dealer suspected of knowing the warhead’s whereabouts. Intelligence suggests Josef was involved in the warhead’s theft, possibly as a middleman. He infiltrates the heavily guarded facility, avoiding patrols and cameras, to extract Josef. After navigating warehouses and rail tracks, he finds Josef in a guarded compound. A cutscene shows Agent capturing Josef, who is uncooperative but confirms his uncle, Jach Priboi, is a key player in the arms deal. Josef is airlifted out, and Jones escapes under fire.
Objective: Capture Josef Priboi for interrogation.
Mission 2: SAM Base
Anya’s interrogation of Josef reveals that Jach Priboi orchestrated the warhead’s theft. Josef claims Jach is at a nearby surface-to-air missile (SAM) base in Estonia, preparing to ship the warhead. Jones infiltrates the base to locate Jach and gather intel. He disables SAM launchers to ensure a safe extraction and hacks into the base’s systems. However, Jach is not present, and he finds documents indicating Jach has moved to a military airfield. The mission establishes Jach as the primary target and introduces the urgency of stopping the warhead’s transfer.
Objective: Locate Jach Priboi and disable SAM defenses.
Mission 3: Military Airbase
Jones tracks Jach to a large military airfield in Estonia, a hub for arms trafficking. The base is heavily fortified with aircraft, tanks, and patrols. He sabotages fuel depots and hacks security systems to access Jach’s transport plane. A cutscene reveals Jach has already fled, but Jones recovers a manifest confirming the warhead’s movement to a radar base. Anya warns that time is running out, as the warhead could be armed soon. The mission highlights Agent Jones’s resourcefulness and the escalating stakes.
Objective: Find Jach and recover evidence of the warhead’s location.
Mission 4: GOD (Guard Observation Defense)
Jones pursues the trail to a fortified observation post guarding a critical supply route. The base, nicknamed “GOD” by operatives, is a checkpoint for arms shipments. Jones infiltrates the facility, avoiding snipers and guard towers, to intercept a convoy carrying warhead components. He plants explosives to destroy the convoy and retrieves a coded message indicating Jach’s next destination: a border outpost. The mission introduces Ekk, a rogue ex-KGB officer, as Jach’s associate, hinting at a larger conspiracy.
Objective: Destroy the convoy and gather intel on Jach.
Mission 5: Radar Base
The coded message leads Jones to a radar installation in Russia, where Jach is overseeing warhead modifications. The base is equipped with advanced surveillance and anti-aircraft systems. Jones disables radar dishes to prevent detection and infiltrates the command center. He discovers Jach has left for a communications hub, but a computer hack reveals Ekk’s involvement in a plan to detonate the warhead in Europe. Anya warns Jones that Ekk is a dangerous wildcard with a personal vendetta against NATO.
Objective: Disable radar systems and uncover Ekk’s plans.
Mission 6: Get Priboi
Jones tracks Jach to a remote Estonian outpost near the Russian border. The mission is a direct assault to capture Jach, who is now confirmed as the warhead’s handler. Jones navigates a snowy forest and a heavily guarded compound, facing intense resistance. In a cutscene, Jones corners Jach, who surrenders and reveals under interrogation that Ekk has taken the warhead to a weapons factory. Jach claims he was only a facilitator, and Ekk is the mastermind. Jones airlifts Jach out for further questioning.
Objective: Capture Jach Priboi alive.
Mission 7: Border Crossing
With Jach in custody, Jones crosses the Russian border to pursue Ekk. The border is a fortified checkpoint with mines, snipers, and patrols. Jones must stealthily navigate the area to reach a rendezvous point for extraction. Anya informs Jones that Ekk is preparing the warhead at a nearby weapons factory. The mission is a tense stealth operation, emphasizing Jones’s ability to operate behind enemy lines. A cutscene shows Ekk taunting Jones via intercepted comms, revealing her knowledge of his pursuit.
Objective: Cross the border undetected.
Mission 8: Re-Supply
Jones arrives at a Russian weapons depot supplying Ekk’s operation. The depot is a sprawling complex with barracks, armories, and vehicle bays. Jones sabotages supply lines and plants explosives to disrupt Ekk’s logistics. He hacks a terminal, revealing the warhead’s transfer to a train. Anya warns that Ekk is accelerating her plans, and the train is heading to a nuclear facility. The mission underscores the logistical scale of Ekk’s operation.
Objective: Sabotage the depot and confirm the warhead’s movement.
Mission 9: Missile Train
Jones intercepts a military train transporting the warhead across Russia. The train is heavily guarded, with armored cars and onboard security. Jones boards the moving train, fighting through compartments to reach the warhead’s carriage. He plants a tracking device but is unable to stop the train, which is headed to a mountain castle. A cutscene shows Ekk mocking Jones’s efforts, revealing her plan to arm the warhead as a suitcase nuke.
Objective: Track the warhead and survive the train assault.
Mission 10: Defend Priboi
Anya informs Jones that Josef Priboi, now cooperating, is being targeted by Ekk’s mercenaries at a safe house. Jones must defend Josef from waves of attackers while awaiting extraction. The mission is a defensive stand, with Jones using mounted weapons and traps to protect Josef. In a cutscene, Josef reveals Ekk’s castle stronghold, a former Soviet facility where she’s finalizing the nuke. Josef is extracted, and Jones prepares to infiltrate the castle.
Objective: Protect Josef Priboi until extraction.
Mission 11: Eagle’s Nest I
Jones assaults Ekk’s mountain castle, a fortified relic in the Russian wilderness. The outer defenses include snipers, turrets, and a labyrinth of trenches. He disables anti-aircraft guns to allow an airstrike and infiltrates the castle’s outer walls. Anya provides satellite intel, revealing the warhead is inside. The mission is a grueling blend of stealth and action, with Jones facing overwhelming odds. A cutscene shows Ekk preparing the nuke, unaware of Jones’s approach.
Objective: Breach the castle’s outer defenses.
Mission 12: Eagle’s Nest II
Inside the castle, Jones navigates tight corridors, guard rooms, and armories. He hacks security systems to disable traps and locates Ekk’s command center. The warhead is armed, and Ekk is moments from escaping. Jones confronts Ekk’s elite guards in a brutal firefight. A cutscene reveals Ekk fleeing to a nuclear facility, leaving the warhead behind. He secures the warhead but must pursue Ekk to stop her final plan.
Objective: Secure the warhead and locate Ekk.
Mission 13: Nuclear Infiltration
Jones tracks Ekk to a nuclear storage facility in Russia, where she plans to detonate a backup device. The facility is a maze of reactors, silos, and security systems. Jones disables cooling systems to delay Ekk’s plan and fights through her remaining forces. Anya warns that a detonation could trigger a chain reaction, devastating the region. The mission is a race against time, with Jones using every skill to survive.
Objective: Stop Ekk’s backup plan and secure the facility.
Mission 14: Finding the Bomb
In the final mission, Agent Jones confronts Ekk in the facility’s core. Ekk has rigged the warhead to detonate, and he must disarm it while fighting her personal guard. The environment is claustrophobic, with radiation hazards and collapsing structures. In the climactic cutscene, he faces Ekk in a tense standoff. Ekk taunts Jones, revealing her motive: revenge against NATO for her KGB exile. He outwits Ekk, disarming the nuke and killing her in a final shootout. The warhead is secured, and Agent escapes as the facility self-destructs. Anya congratulates it but hints at future threats.
Objective: Disarm the warhead and eliminate Ekk.
Epilogue
The game ends with Jones extracting via helicopter, the warhead safely recovered. Anya debriefs him, noting that Jach and Josef Priboi will face trial, but the IGI suspects other players may still be active in the arms network. The ending leaves room for a sequel (I.G.I.-2: Covert Strike), with Jones’s mission complete but the broader conspiracy unresolved.
